The Study on Antibody for Cytomegalovirus in Infants and Children

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus has been shown to infect in utero 0.5 to 2.0% of all newborn infants. Although most infants infected at birth are initially asymptomatic, approximately five to fifteen percent develop sensorineural hearing deficits or other central nervous system abnormalities. Infants in intensive care neuseries are stressed by prematurity, cardiopulmonary disease and other life-threatening-conditions:¢¥They usually receive frequent blood transfusions and are exposed to other potential sources of cytomegalovirus. Additionally reactivation of a latent infection commonly occurs in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy.
The present study was designed to determine the incidence of antibodies for cytomegalovirus in pediatric age groups. Thirty six samples of cord blood sera and 84 cases from age one month to 15 years were examined with Enzygnost, Anti-cytomegalovirus reagents for antibody detection in the ELISA (Behring).
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Cytomegalovirus antibody was detected from 97 of 120 cases with positive rate of 80.8%.
2. Positive rate of cytomegalovirus antibody in cord sera was 88.9%, in the infantile age group with 70 4%,
in young children age group 77.1%, and school children group show 83.7% of positive rate. 3. There were no significant difference between both sexes or area.
